Favia corals, often referred to as moon coral, are a hardy and colourful large polyp stony coral. They grow similarly to acanthastea, forming radiant growth structures, but tend to have smaller polyps, with a distinctive ‘eye’ colour which is usually different from that of the polyp. Their skeletons form what can be described as a ‘honeycomb’ shape. Favias come in all colour combinations and varieties imaginable. They are very hardy and easy to propagate, since the tissue is able to heal and rebuild quickly after fragmentation. Favia corals make a great addition to any reef aquarium for hobbyists of any level.
