Signature Corals

For the past decade or so, collector names for corals have become commonplace, often fetching a higher price depending on the companies’ abbreviation slapped in front of the name. Some of the earliest named corals, like Oregon Tort, Tyree Pink Lemonade and ORA Red Planet are still considered some of the best corals in the hobby. Since this, the era of marketing signature corals emerged, with companies like Jason Fox, Reef Raft, WWC, etc. One of the problems with the ‘name game’ is that we end up seeing a lot of the same corals hitting the market, with different names and varying price tags.

This is because many corals, especially maricultured SPS corals coming from Indonesia, are grown from the same broodstock (mother colonies) in the farms overseas. It is important to know when a coral is unique and special enough to name. This is why some of the most unique corals hitting the market are wild collected specimens. Another problem is that any given coral can vary in colouration and growth structure from one aquarium to another.

I choose to only name corals that have been in my care long enough to know that they are unique, having settled into their final colouration. This process requires a keen eye and knowledge of what other corals exist on the market and which regions, even which suppliers, they come from. It also requires a fun and appropriate name! At the end of the day, it’s hard to sell a coral if you can’t call it something, so some are given more generic names which are easily understood by coral enthusiasts. Having collected corals for 20+ years, I am happy to offer what I believe is a unique collection of kick-ass aquarium grown corals, at a fair price.
