Zoas and Palys

Zoanthids and Palythoa are the most well known and highly collected soft coral species. They are often chosen as ‘beginner corals’ because certain common varieties are known to thrive in ‘less than ideal’ conditions. Zoas and Palys make up some of the most colourful and bright corals in a reef aquarium hobby. They spread by forming a leathery ‘mat’ sort of base, where the polyps protrude from. Their polyps can have highly contrasted colours and/or detailed patterns on their skirt (outer tentacles), oral disc (middle section) or in the eye (mouth/center area).

Zoas and Palys are known to grow very quickly, given a steady supply of nutrients, stable alkalinity and salinity. We recommend mounting zoanthids and palythoa in different areas of the tank, so that they don’t compete with one another for space. The reason is that Palythoa species tend to have larger polyps, which can shade out the smaller headed zoanthids and cause them to slowly die off. The good news is, all types of zoas and palys will not attack each other, in the event that they do grow together. Zoas and Palys tend to do well when placed in a region of the tank with low to medium light and flow, making them a good choice for the bottom of the tank. This is not to say that they can’t handle higher levels of par. Some will look excellent at par levels of 200-300. It is not necessary to directly feed zoas and palys, but it definitely isn’t a bad idea to feed them with a product like Coral Frenzy a couple times per week. Zoas tend to be quite tolerant, even do better in systems with higher levels of nutrients, so they often pair well with LPS dominant systems. We suggest an No3 of 10-25ppm and Po4 .03-.07ppm
