Montipora species are a very popular variety of small polyp coral species. They require very similar conditions and water chemistry to Acropora, however, they are often considered easier to care for. For this reason, montipora corals are a good first choice of SPS coral for a new hobbyist or as ‘tester frags’ in newly established systems. Suitable placement for most Montipora species in a reef aquarium tends to be in the mid to upper part of the aquarium. That being said, they often do well in lower spots, making them good ‘space fillers’ in areas which would be a bit too dark for certain light demanding acropora species.
